Shucking Corn, Kentucky Style

Shucking Corn, Kentucky Style

This morning bright and early, we gathered, and shucked our corn to put in the freezer.  We do things a little differently than most folks, I guess.  For many years, we've been using a chop block, and hatchet to cut the ends off the corn, before we shuck it.  For those of you, who may not know what a chop block is;  it is a tree stump used to cut your kindling on.
We cleaned the chop block, washed the hatchet and started chopping.  We can shuck bushels of corn in a very short time, this way.  We put around 20 quart bags of corn in the freezer, then Bell, and Banana Peppers.  I hope to start canning Green Beans by the end of the week, then Tomatoes early next week.
God has Blessed our little garden, and our lives, and we thank Him.  I have been working for about 40 years, but have been off from work since September.  I have really enjoyed my time off.  I'm trying to get a few things caught up before I go back to work.  I may not get another break for quite some time.
Blessings to you wherever you are, Trisha

Summertime in Kentucky

Beets, Red Sails Lettuce, Mustard, and Onions
Summertime, so much to do, gardening, canning and preserving.  Long evenings, listening to Katydid, Crickets, and Jar Flies; watching Lightening Bugs, and reminiscing of days gone by.  The song of Whippoorwill echos through the nightime sky.
Summertime in Kentucky, a thing of beauty.

Twilight Rainbow

A couple of nights ago, around 8:00 P.M., we had the rare occurrence of and evening rainbow.  We seldom see a rainbow that late, but, it was a welcome sight.
Hope you are enjoying a beautiful Summer, wherever you are.

Blessings, Trisha

A Field Blessed with Wildlife

Turkey Gobbler and Hens

Today the fields behind our house came alive with turkey, a pair of geese, and crow.
I took this picture of a gobbler and his hens about midday.  The deer don't come until about dusk and stay until dawn.
We never know what we will see when we look out a window, sometimes coyote, fox, owl, blue heron, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, and ground hogs, but the cutest thing we've seen was a family of skunk we saw last Spring.  These fields are definitely Blessed with wildlife.  Have a Blessed day.

Real Live Country Woman

Boots

This is a portrait of a Real Live Country Woman.  We call her Boots.  She was raised in the mountains of McCreary County Kentucky.  Boots is one of the most unique ladies I have ever met.  She is nearly eighty years old and still holds full time job, and is an avid rabbit hunter.  Boots has had a very hard life, but never lets it get her down.
She has a passion for basketball, especially when her Kentucky Wildcats are playing.  Her greatest passion may well be her love of rabbit hunting.  She hunts the clearcuts near her home, with her beloved beagles.  Some of her beagles have Christmas names, like Holly and Noel, then there is Dazzle, Red Cloud, and Fireball.  She loves her dogs.  When season is out she gets up very early and takes them out before she goes to work just for exercise, even though she can't take a rabbit.  Now that's love.
I say hats off to all women with that much grit.  Boots is an inspiration to all around her.

Snow Fog Rising

Snow Fog Rising Across the Fields
Another glorious December day!  We were spared the brunt of the winter storm that dumped snow and ice accross much of the Bluegrass.  We only had a light coating of ice, then temperatures quickly rebounded and caused a beautiful snow fog to rise accross the fields behind our house.
Only nine days until Christmas!  What a wonderful time of year.  We have lots of cookies to bake and candies to make, but, can't deliver them until the roads clear.
As soon as it clears up some, we hope to get everything delivered, because they are already talking about another winter weather system heading for Kentucky in the long range forcast.
So what we plan to do, we need to do quickly.
    Merry Christmas Everybody!

October Skies and Fresh Rolled Hay

The Fall hay crop has been mowed, raked, fluffed, and rolled.  The fields once graced with tall fesque, and red clover is clipped to the ground.    Now, flocks of wild turkey roam the open fields with ease.  A family of skunk also enjoys the low grass and travels easily accross the fields. Even our tom cat has been taking longer trips toward the back gate and beyond.
Around the homeplace we've been busy covering our woodpiles, and cleaning the chimney for the winter, because Fall comes early sometimes in Kentucky.  We are already seeing a good crop of Fall mustard greens and turnips.
Marigolds, Zinnas, Cosmos and Ornamental Peppers still are the highlight of our Fall garden. Clear skies and low humidity are welcome after the long hot summer.
We just came out of a seven day Revival at our 'Old Country Church' and it went well.  One young man gave his heart to the Lord and several came to the Altar to pray nightly.  We had a lot of good preaching and singing and it was good.  We thank God for joining us in the Revival.  We thank Him for the little things like clear October skies and the smell of fresh rolled hay. We Praise Him for He is Worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fall my Favorite time of year.

The crisp evening air, the call of the katydid and clear skys are welcome changes.
The long hot summer nearly gone, making way for evening walks at the lake.
The river is clearing some; we may get to take our john boat out and do some bass fishing.
Won't be long 'til fall apples are in season.
Apple butter time!  We need to put some apples in the freezer for the winter.
Nothing better than fried apples, hot biscuits and gravy when the winter wind howls outside.

With Fall's beauty and nature's bounty,
I remember that the Bible say something like,
"What is man, that God is mindful of him?"
I don't know the answer,
but, I am so thankful, He is mindful of us.
